Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

Program Overview

Background:

Funding has been secured from the Department of Health and Aged Care to support Nursing & Midwifery students in completing the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) e-Learning module over the next four years (2024–2027). Limited funding is also available to train a select number of university instructors to deliver the second component of the course.


MHFA Course Components:

Component 1: Online Module (Funded)

  • Completing this core module earns students a Certificate of Completion and the title of MHFAider.
  • Voucher allocations are requested from Schools.


Component 2: Instructor-Led Training (Not Funded)

  • Universities must decide whether to offer it, based on their instructor availability and capacity to upskill.
  • This optional component leads to students gaining 'Accredited' MHFAider status.


Funding Details

  • Funding covers the e-Learning module for 4 years (2024-2027)
  • Limited funding is available for training new instructors to expand university capacity for offering Component 2.
  • Any existing instructors must self-fund upskilling to the latest MHFA program.

    The Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA®) for Health Professional Students course teaches health professional students how to provide initial support to a peer or other adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.
